The study found that patients with TSCI are at a significantly higher risk of developing chronic conditions such as hypertension, stroke, depression, and diabetes, compared to a control group without spinal cord injuries. This increased risk was observed regardless of age, location of the injury, and prior health status. The research team analyzed data from hospital-based registries at Mass General Brigham and the University of California (UC) Health System, covering a 28-year period from January 1996 to January 2024. They studied 1,038 patients with TSCI from Mass General Brigham and 1,711 patients from UC, tracking their health outcomes over up to 20 years. The study revealed a higher incidence of chronic conditions and mortality in the TSCI group compared to the control group.
